Florida Family Activities in Museums

Five to ten years ago, ask a kid what he thinks of museums and he’ll tell you exactly what they were: boring. Today it’s good news that museums are slowly upstaging theme parks when it comes to catching little kids’ short attention spans, and family activity ideas. And Florida has some of the best educational places in the country to boast.

First on the list is the largest science center in the Southeastern USA, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa. Their 25th Anniversary Exhibit, The Making of MOSI, showcases rare items and archives never before displayed for the public. And their upside-down car race, The Vertical Rider, is also a big hit for the kids.

Take your child inside the eye of a hurricane in Imaginarium’s The Hurricane Experience exhibit. Imaginarium Hands On Museum in Fort Myers is the best hands on museum in Florida with twenty other exhibits that allow children (and parents, too) to be in the forefronts of science itself. It’s a good place to start, if your kid gets overwhelmed easy by bigger museums.

Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium goes out of its cosmic boundaries to offer an outdoor animal exhibit and indoor exploring adventure with an Indiana Jones-style twist. Some of their popular exhibits include, Newton’s Notions, an exhibit on the Physics of everyday stuff and the Immersion Theater, which takes you inside a virtual human body in a small spaceship.

You can take your kid to explore relevant activities like banks, a news broadcasting room, a school house and a grocery store all designed to be played with and explored hands on by kids inside the Explorations V Children’s Museum in Lakeland. This small town attraction sure has big lessons in store for your young learners.

You can make kids experience the thrills of being in a real race track in the kids section of Daytona USA. They’re offering exhibits that let kids see what it’s like inside a race car in the middle of an important race with video simulations with realistic bumps and turns. They also let kids assist in almost real pits stops and play around with the cars. Daytona USA is a fun ride for the whole family.

These hands-on museums in Florida are going to great lengths to make sure they don’t get equated with boredom anymore. The new family activities and fun learning experiences they offer are just evident effort towards this. And did I mention that they’re a heck of a lot fun?
