Exercise and Breast Implants
Breast implant surgery is an important intervention. It is performed under general anesthesia and requires deep modifications to your breasts. The incisions made during surgery need time to heal and the patient usually requires 1 week of complete rest and up to 6-8 weeks of abstention from strenuous activity. This, of course, includes exercise. In the longer term, however, what are the possible effects of exercising on the breast implant and vice versa? Will the patient have to abandon exercising? These questions are discussed here.
Many doctors recommend that the patient continues routine exercises after breast implant surgery (after the rest period). This is because exercising is part of the well-being of the person. Taking that away from her will negatively affect her lifestyle and may even result in health problems. However, the patient should now be aware of new limitations that the breast implant poses over the body. The body cannot undertake the same levels of exertion without compromising the integrity of the breast implant or causing it to shift.
In general, implants placed under the muscle will be subject to more strain during exercise. These patients should be even more wary of the unint ended consequences of excessive exercising on their implants. Most doctors advise that the breasts are adequately supported during the exercise (a very good bra).
For a professional athlete, things are a little more complicated as she has to consider the effects of the breast implant on her performance. Several issues can arise, including:
- Side to side movement of the implant during effort; implants may be more noticeable in sports that necessitate movement of the shoulder (tennis, golf, racket ball). The displacement of the implant may also impair the arm’s range of motion. This can be reduced by keeping the diameter of the implant less than or equal to the diameter of the original breast.
- The weight of the implant is another issue. While not noticeable normally, when running or jumping the increased weight can be a problem. It is often recommended to have a good support to alleviate the situation.
- Breast implants would also result in increased drag. This will be noticed by professional swimming athletes.
There is no evidence that exercise affects the position of the breast implant in the long run or reduces its lifetime. Save for accidents, which may cause the implant to rupture, normal exercising does not influence the breast implant at all. There are several other factors which can affect the position of implants after surgery. Size and weight of the implant can cause it to bottom out. Chest muscle can also push the implants downward, if the implant is placed under the muscle. For implants placed over the mu scle, there may be an unnatural transition from the chest to the breast.
The main recommendation is therefore to assess the suitability of the breast implant beforehand. If you are a professional athlete or you exercise a lot, determine whether the breast implant would suit your lifestyle or whether you would be willing to sacrifice at least part of that lifestyle. Secondly, wearing very good support clothing at all times during exercises is crucial to maintain breast implant integrity.
